Globally recognised professional banker, a leader of the internationally rated Fintech Association, an influencer and a thought leader, a respected Futurist, Dr. Segun Aina is an accomplished community leader and an uncommon Philanthropist.
With three decades of distinguished banking career and voluntarily retirement from active service in banking in 2004, following a six years tenure as MD/CEO, Dr. Segun Aina’s core area of interest was operations and technology – using technology to deliver delightful banking services and products in a very efficient manner.
In his capacity, he has acted as the President, Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (2012 to 2014); President, West African Bankers Association (Nigeria Chapter), 2001. He was a member of the 10 (Ten) Nation Task Force set up in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia in 2011 for the establishment of the Global Banking Education Standards Board (GBESTB) and he was instrumental in bringing a large number of institutes into the membership. The GBESTB was formally inaugurated in April 2017 and he was elected the inaugural Chairman of Global Council of the Board.
Indelibly passionate about Financial Technology (Fintech), Dr. Segun Aina incorporated Fintech Associates Limited over a decade ago, and he sits as the Chairman. He is the initiator and founding President, Fintech Association of Nigeria in 2017, the Convener and inaugural President of the Africa Fintech Network inaugurated in December 2018, Founder, The Fintech Institute and member of the UK-Africa Fintech Investment Group, a UK Government initiative co-Chaired by Lord Mayor of London and UK Prime Minister Ambassador for Business Fintech.
Dr. Aina who has been variously described as Nigeria’s Fintech envoy, incubated a number of successful Fintech startups and sits on the Boards of various institutions in Banking, Insurance, Agriculture, Technology sectors etc.
He has served his community of Otan Ayegbaju at the highest leadership level of the President of the Community Developmental organization – the Otan Ayegbaju Progressive Union (OAPU), served Osun State in various capacities and also served at the National level at various times including a member of the National Confab, 2014. Dr. Aina established the Segun Aina Foundation in 1994 to cater for the education of the brilliant but financially challenged students, and hundreds of young people have benefited from this philanthropic initiative.
Dr. Aina is a distinguished alumnus of University of Lagos, University of Ibadan, INSEAD France, Harvard Business School, IMD Switzerland, Lagos Business School.
His contributions to the academic community are legendary. He was on the pioneer Advancement Board of the Obafemi Awolowo University (2006 to 2012) and currently serves as Chairman Advancement Board of Federal University of Technology Akure, (2011 to date), Chairman National Think Tank (initiative of University of Ibadan Research Foundation of which he is member) and Member Osun State University Advancement Board. He is a Fellow of London Institute of Banking and Finance, Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, Nigerian Institute of Chartered Arbitrators, Institute of Directors, Nigerian Institute of Management as well as Member, Toronto Region Board of Trade, Canada and Canadian Council for Africa.
He has received various honours and awards including the Nigeria National Honours of Officer of the Order of Federal Republic (OFR) and honorary doctorate degrees from three Universities.
He has served on the board of different organizations. Some of the positions he currently occupies include the Chairman for Fintech Associates Limited, Chairman Board of Trustees, Fintech Association of Nigeria and Chairman of O’dua Investment Company Limited etc.
He is a good example of a dedicated family man. He is happily married to Mrs. Olufunmilayo Aina and blessed with children.
The Foundation Association
Segun Aina Foundation Awardees Association (SAFAA) was formed in 1999 out of the need to coordinate all the awardees of the Foundation and ensure their respective needs are met with a view to realizing and actualizing the vision of Segun Aina Foundation.
The goal was to build a large number of active, educated, and fulfilled youths, not predicated on politics, religion or race. Presently, the association has more than 200 members spread all over Nigeria and other parts of the world.
The association was founded to fulfill the following objectives:
- To promote friendship, harmony, unity, a sense of belonging and brotherhood among its members.
 - To encourage and enlighten members on the importance of academic progress.
 - To strengthen mutual interactions between membership and the SAF management members (i.e. the Founder, BOT members, and Admin. Officer)
 - To address the needs/ concern of SAF Awardees by creating a caring community based family.
 - To foster social relationships among members through annual party and regular meetings, with a view to sustaining the mandate of the Foundation.
